The Orbit Series explores the nature of inner balance and the conditions under which it can emerge. Here, inner balance is understood as a condition sustained by an appropriate distance. It takes shape when distinct presences remain in relation without breaching one another’s boundaries. The intervals between them are not merely physical gaps, but the minimum conditions that allow each presence to retain its integrity. In the paintings, this condition becomes visible through the spacing and arrangement of planetary forms.

Within the series, “orbit” functions as a conceptual device for visualizing how distance organizes relation. The work borrows from astronomical orbits the principle of sustained intervals, while setting aside the model of a single, absolute center. In some scenes, a localized center appears temporarily; in others, the intervals between planetary forms come to the foreground without any center at all. What matters is not whether a center exists, but how distance is formed between presences. Orbit, then, refers less to a trajectory around a center than to the relational intervals between planetary forms. The forms do not directly illustrate forces of attraction or repulsion. Rather, they suggest how such forces generate and regulate distance.

The planetary forms may be read as people or emotions. Through them, the series explores distances between one person and another, between the self and its emotions, and among emotions themselves. Planets placed too close together or gathered into dense clusters suggest boundaries under pressure. Those maintaining measured intervals, by contrast, reveal conditions in which distinct presences can coexist without losing their separateness. The series thus locates inner balance not in the forms themselves, but in the intervals that allow them to remain together.

This balance becomes visible differently according to the scale of each scene. In monumental settings—palaces, surreal interiors, vast landscapes, stairways, and spaces suspended above water—it is articulated through the spacing and arrangement of planetary forms. Within these scenes, the planets may be read simultaneously as people, emotions, or relational presences, bringing psychic states and social structures into the same pictorial field.

By contrast, smaller planetary forms placed on bowls, desks, beds, or windowsills do not foreground distance as explicitly. Instead, they allow balance to be encountered on the scale of everyday life. These scenes suggest that balance is not confined to monumental structures, but may also be discovered in small and ordinary moments of daily existence.

The Orbit Series does not propose a single ideal balance or a fixed answer. The appropriate distance required for coexistence differs from one relationship to another. Balance is therefore not determined by a universal measure; it takes shape differently within each relationship. In the Orbit Series, maintaining an appropriate distance becomes a way of defining inner balance itself. This balance is neither absolute nor permanent. It must be continually recalibrated as relationships change.

Orbit Series는 마음의 균형이 무엇이고, 그것이 어떤 상태에서 성립하는지를 탐구하는 회화 연작이다. 이 시리즈에서 균형은 적당한 거리가 유지되는 상태로 정의되며, 서로가 서로를 침범하지 않고 관계를 유지할 수 있을 때 비로소 성립한다. 따라서 이러한 간격은 단순한 물리적 거리가 아니라, 각자가 무너지지 않고 남아 있기 위해 필요한 최소한의 조건이 된다. 작품 안에서 이러한 거리의 유지는 행성들 사이의 간격과 배치를 통해 드러난다.

이 시리즈에서 ‘궤도(orbit)’는 거리가 유지되는 원리를 시각화하기 위한 개념적 장치다. Orbit Series는 천문학적 궤도에서 일정한 간격이 지속되는 원리만을 차용하되, 하나의 절대적 중심은 두지 않는다. 대신 어떤 장면에서는 국소적 중심이 형성되기도 하고, 다른 장면에서는 중심 없이 여러 행성들 사이의 간격만이 전면에 드러나기도 한다. 여기서 중요한 것은 중심의 존재 여부보다 행성들 사이에 형성되는 거리 관계다. 따라서 Orbit Series의 궤도는 중심을 도는 선이 아니라, 그 사이의 거리를 의미한다. 행성의 형상 역시 서로를 끌어당기거나 밀어내는 힘을 직접 재현하기보다, 그러한 힘이 행성들 사이의 거리를 형성하는 방식을 은유적으로 드러낸다.

작품 안의 행성들은 사람이나 감정으로 읽히며, 이를 통해 사람–사람, 자아–감정, 감정–감정 사이에 형성되는 거리의 상태를 다룬다. 서로 가까이 놓이거나 밀집한 행성들은 경계가 흔들릴 가능성을 암시하고, 일정한 간격을 유지하는 행성들은 각자의 경계를 잃지 않은 채 공존할 수 있는 상태를 드러낸다. 이처럼 Orbit Series는 개별 행성보다 그 사이에 유지되는 거리의 상태를 통해, 균형이 어떻게 성립하고 드러나는지를 탐구한다.

이 균형은 장면의 규모에 따라 다른 방식으로 드러난다. 궁전, 초현실적 실내, 큰 풍경, 계단, 물 위의 공간과 같은 거대 장면은 행성들 사이의 간격과 배치를 통해 균형을 드러내는 장면이다. 이 장면들에서 행성은 사람처럼도, 감정처럼도, 관계의 자리처럼도 읽히며, 내면의 상태와 사회의 구조를 함께 드러낸다. 반면 그릇, 책상, 침대, 창가에 놓인 작은 행성들은 행성들 사이의 거리가 전면에 드러나기보다, 균형을 일상의 규모 안에서 찾아내게 하는 장면에 가깝다. 일상의 장면들은 균형이 거대한 구조 속에서만 이해되는 것이 아니라, 생활 속의 사소한 순간들 속에서도 찾아낼 수 있음을 보여준다.

Orbit Series는 하나의 이상적인 균형이나 고정된 해답을 제시하지 않는다. 관계마다 유지되어야 하는 적절한 간격이 다르기 때문이다. 따라서 균형은 하나의 고정된 거리로 결정되지 않으며, 각각의 관계 안에서 다르게 형성된다. 이 시리즈에서 ‘적당한 거리의 유지’는 균형을 정의하는 방식이며, 그 균형은 절대적이거나 불변하는 상태가 아니라 관계의 변화 속에서 계속 다시 맞추어져야 한다.

‘궤도 Otbit’ 전시서문

조은정의 최근 작업인 《Orbit Series》는 마음의 균형이 어떻게 형성되고 유지되는가에 대한 질문에서 출발한다. 화면에 등장하는 형상들은 분명한 형태를 지니고 있지만 현실 너머의 낯선 감각을 불러일으키며, 익숙함과 이질감 사이에서 자연스럽게 설득력을 얻는다. 여기서 균형은 고정된 조화의 상태가 아니라, 서로 다른 감정과 존재들이 완전히 충돌하지도, 완전히 멀어지지도 않은 채 관계를 지속할 수 있는 상태에 가깝다. 작가는 이러한 관계의 구조를 ‘궤도(Orbit)’라는 개념을 통해 시각화한다. 여기서 궤도는 하나의 중심을 맹목적으로 도는 선이 아니라, 서로를 무너뜨리지 않기 위해 유지되는 거리의 질서이다.

작가의 초기 작업은 현실과 환상 사이의 긴장감을 중심에 두고 있었다. 개인의 시선을 중심으로 숲과 폐허, 몽환적인 공간 속에 놓인 작은 존재들을 바라보며, 현실의 질서에서 벗어나고자 하는 내면의 욕망을 드러내었다. 화면은 현실과 무의식이 충돌하는 심리적 장면으로 펼쳐지며, 이때 환상은 단순한 비현실의 세계가 아니라 현실에서 충족되지 못한 욕망과 감정이 모습을 드러내는 공간으로 작동했다. 이러한 점에서 조은정의 이전 회화는 현실이 욕망을 제한하는 한편, 환상을 통해 억압된 충동이 표출된다고 보았던 프로이트의 정신분석적 관점과 맞닿아 있다.

그러나 《Orbit Series》에 이르러 작가의 관심은 욕망 자체보다 관계가 형성되는 방식으로 이동한다. 화면 속 행성들은 우주 속에서 도달해야 할 대상이 아니라, 하나의 장면 안에서 일정한 간격을 유지하며 공존하는 존재들이다. 그것들은 감정과 감정, 사람과 사람 사이의 관계적 거리를 드러낸다. 여기서 중요한 것은 각각의 행성이 무엇을 의미하는가가 아니라, 그 사이에 형성되는 거리와 리듬이다. 너무 멀어도, 지나치게 가까워도 관계는 유지될 수 없다. 작가가 말하는 균형은 혼자 완성되는 상태가 아니라, 서로 다른 존재들이 관계를 조율하며 만들어가는 과정이다. 행성은 고양이와 함께 이동하고, 정원과 회랑, 물 위의 공간을 떠돌며 끊임없이 새로운 관계를 형성한다.

이러한 변화는 정신분석의 흐름 안에서도 이해할 수 있다. 프로이트가 상징 하나하나의 의미를 통해 무의식을 해석하려 했다면, 멜라니 클라인은 인간이 처음에는 대상을 '좋은 대상'과 '나쁜 대상'으로 분리해 경험하지만, 성장하면서 그것이 하나의 동일한 대상임을 받아들이는 과정에 주목했다. 도널드 위니컷은 인간이 현실과 환상, 자아와 타자 사이의 중간공간 (transitional space)에서 놀이하고 관계를 맺으며 자신을 형성한다고 설명한다. 이 공간은 타인을 완전히 소유하거나 이해하는 대신, 서로의 차이를 인정한 채 관계를 지속할 수 있게 하는 심리적 여백이다. 조은정의 회화에서 행성과 사물이 들어간 풍경은 이러한 중간공간을 만들어내는 매개물처럼 기능한다. 그것들은 감정을 직접 해결하거나 설명하기보다, 감정이 잠시 머물고 스스로 견딜 수 있도록 거리를 만들어준다.

조은정의 회화 역시 하나의 상징을 해석하기보다, 서로 다른 형상들이 하나의 장면을 이루어가는 과정에 주목한다. 궁전과 계단, 회랑과 행성, 나무와 물은 분명한 형태를 지니면서도 하나의 의미로 고정되지 않는다. 각각의 형상은 화면 안에서 자연스럽게 조응하며 서로의 존재를 받아들이고, 새로운 풍경을 만들어 낸다. 아치형의 문 너머로 이어지는 공간은 현실과 환상을 구분하는 경계가 아니라, 다양한 감정과 기억이 잠시 머물며 새로운 감각을 형성하는 장소가 된다. 머무름과 이동, 안정과 변화가 공존하는 이러한 공간은 삶의 불확실성을 품으면서도, 서로 다른 존재들이 함께 살아갈 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다.

반복적으로 등장하는 정원과 회랑, 물 위의 공간, 지하의 건축 구조 역시 단순한 배경이 아니다. 그것들은 감정이 머물고 순환하는 내면의 장소이자, 서로 다른 존재들을 수용하는 보호된 공간으로 기능한다. 위니컷이 말한 '안아주는 환경(Holding Environment)'처럼, 조은정의 공간은 불안을 제거하기보다 감정이 무너지지 않은 채 머물 수 있는 조건을 마련한다. 화면 속 행성들이 서로 충돌하지 않으면서도 완전히 흩어지지 않는 이유도 여기에 있다.

결국 《Orbit Series》에서 균형은 완성된 상태가 아니다. 그것은 끊임없이 흔들리면서도 관계를 지속하기 위해 다시 조율되는 과정이다. 작가는 행성의 궤도를 통해 인간이 타인과 감정 사이에서 어떻게 적절한 거리를 만들어 가는지를 보여준다. 현실과 환상, 의식과 무의식, 고립과 연결은 더 이상 서로 대립하지 않는다. 그것들은 서로를 침범하지 않은 채 하나의 장면 안에서 공존하며, 관계 속에서 끊임없이 새롭게 형성되는 균형의 가능성을 조용히 제안한다.

Cho Eunjoung’s recent body of work, the Orbit Series, begins with a question: how does inner balance take shape, and how can it be sustained? The forms that appear in her paintings are clearly defined, yet they evoke an unfamiliar sensation that seems to extend beyond everyday reality. Poised between familiarity and estrangement, they establish a visual logic of their own.

Here, balance does not refer to a fixed state of harmony. Rather, it describes a condition in which different emotions and beings can remain in relation without either fully colliding or drifting irretrievably apart. Cho visualizes this relational structure through the concept of orbit. In her work, an orbit is not simply a trajectory around a single center, but a relational order structured and sustained by distance, allowing distinct presences to coexist without destabilizing the relation between them.

Cho’s earlier paintings centered on the tension between reality and fantasy. Through a distinctly personal gaze, she depicted small presences situated within forests, ruins, and dreamlike spaces, giving form to an inner desire to move beyond the order of reality. The pictorial field unfolded as a psychological scene in which reality and the unconscious came into conflict. Here, fantasy did not function simply as an unreal realm, but as a space in which desires and emotions left unfulfilled in reality could emerge. In this sense, Cho’s earlier paintings resonate with a Freudian psychoanalytic view in which reality constrains desire, while fantasy provides a space for repressed impulses to find expression.

With the emergence of the Orbit Series, however, Cho’s attention shifts from desire itself to the ways in which relationships are formed. The planets in these paintings are not remote objects to be reached in outer space. They coexist within a shared scene, maintaining measured intervals from one another. In doing so, they reveal relational distances between one emotion and another, and between one person and another.

What matters here is not what each planet signifies, but the distance and rhythm that emerge between them. A relationship cannot be sustained when its participants are either too distant or excessively close. Inner balance is therefore not a state achieved by an isolated individual, but a process that unfolds as different beings continually adjust their relations to one another. The planets move alongside a cat and drift through gardens, arcades, and spaces above water, continually entering new relational configurations.

This shift may also be understood within a broader trajectory of psychoanalytic thought. While Freud often approached the unconscious through the interpretation of symbolic formations, Melanie Klein focused on the process through which the subject initially experiences the object as divided into “good” and “bad,” before gradually recognizing these opposing qualities as belonging to the same object. Donald Winnicott described how human beings form a sense of self through play and interaction within a transitional space between reality and fantasy, self and other.

This transitional space makes it possible to sustain a relationship without fully possessing or completely understanding the other, allowing difference to remain intact. In Cho’s paintings, landscapes inhabited by planets and other objects function as mediating structures through which such transitional spaces can emerge. Rather than resolving or explaining emotions directly, they create a distance that allows emotions to remain temporarily and become bearable without immediate resolution.

Cho’s paintings similarly direct attention away from the interpretation of isolated symbols and toward the process through which different forms come together to constitute a scene. Palaces and stairways, arcades and planets, trees and water retain clearly recognizable forms, yet none is confined to a single meaning. Within the pictorial field, these elements respond to one another, accommodate one another’s presence, and generate new landscapes.

The spaces that open beyond arched doorways do not function as boundaries separating reality from fantasy. Instead, they become sites where different emotions and memories may temporarily settle and give rise to new forms of perception. Bringing together stillness and movement, stability and transformation, these spaces hold the uncertainty of life while suggesting the possibility that distinct beings may inhabit a shared world.

The recurring gardens, arcades, spaces above water, and subterranean architectural structures are likewise more than scenic backgrounds. They function as interior terrains where emotions settle and circulate, as well as protected spaces capable of accommodating different forms of existence. Like Winnicott’s concept of the “holding environment,” Cho’s spaces do not eliminate anxiety. Rather, they provide the conditions in which emotions can be held without collapse or fragmentation. This is also why the planets in her paintings neither collide with one another nor disperse entirely.

Ultimately, balance in the Orbit Series is not a completed state. It is an ongoing process that continues to shift and must be recalibrated in order to sustain relationships. Through the orbits of her planets, Cho considers how human beings establish and negotiate appropriate distances between themselves and others, as well as between themselves and their own emotions.

Reality and fantasy, consciousness and the unconscious, isolation and connection no longer operate solely as opposing forces. Without invading or erasing one another, they coexist within a single pictorial field. Cho’s paintings thus quietly propose inner balance not as a final resolution, but as a relational condition continually formed anew within relationships.

Lightness is the first series in which the emotional state of “lightness” is constructed as a pictorial scene. Within this world, emotions are treated not as abstract sentiments but as entities possessing form, color, and weight. While form remains relatively stable, color, texture, and density shift in response to emotional weight. Transparent hues and low-density elements tend to float or disperse, while the pictorial space organizes emotional tension across condensation and expansion, proximity and distance.

These scenes resemble an inner environment more than an external landscape. Structures such as fountains and Ferris wheels create points at which emotions may pause or move, establishing the conditions for release from stagnation and movement toward inner balance. Vehicles such as boats and submarines carry light emotions, allowing them to pass into another state. In works such as Cloud Walker the self begins to move of its own accord toward inner balance, no longer merely reacting to emotion.

Here, lightness functions both as an emotional state and as a condition that opens space for movement. Light emotions do not possess an inherent direction, but they retain buoyancy and the potential to shift. When they encounter constructed structures—fountains, Ferris wheels, or boats—movement becomes possible, and an emotional current begins to form. The scenes in Lightness do not present balance as an achieved state. They remain at the threshold where emotional buoyancy and the artist’s will converge, setting this movement in motion.

Situated within The Shape of Weight, a broader framework that interprets emotion through the concept of weight, Lightness is the first visual field to examine how light emotions take shape and under what conditions they emerge. As subsequent series move toward phases of heaviness and distance, Lightness functions as a point of departure, revealing the initial conditions under which lightness can exist within this emotional structure.

Lightness는 ‘가벼움’이라는 감정의 상태를 하나의 장면으로 구성하는 첫 번째 시리즈다. 이 세계에서 감정은 추상적 정서가 아니라, 형태·색·무게를 지닌 존재로 다뤄진다. 형태는 비교적 안정적으로 유지되는 반면, 색과 질감, 밀도는 감정의 무게에 따라 끊임없이 변주된다. 투명한 색과 낮은 밀도의 요소들은 부유하거나 흩어지는 성향을 보이며, 화면은 응축과 확산, 근접과 거리두기 사이에서 감정의 배치와 긴장을 조율한다.

이 장면들은 외부의 풍경이라기보다 하나의 내면적 환경에 가깝다. 분수대나 대관람차와 같은 구조물은 감정이 머무르거나 이동하는 지점을 형성하며, 정체된 상태에서 벗어나 균형을 향해 나아갈 수 있는 조건을 설정한다. 배나 잠수함과 같은 이동의 매개는 가벼운 감정을 실어 나르며, 감정이 의지에 의해 다른 상태로 옮겨갈 수 있는 과정을 가능하게 한다. 특히 Cloud Walker로 나타나는 장면에서는, 감정에 반응하던 국면을 지나 자아가 스스로 균형을 향해 이동하기 시작하는 시점이 드러난다.

이때 가벼움은 감정이 지닌 하나의 상태이자, 자아가 균형을 향해 이동할 수 있도록 여지를 여는 조건으로 작동한다. 가벼운 감정은 스스로 방향을 갖지 않지만, 부유성과 이동 가능성을 지닌다. 이러한 성질은 분수대, 대관람차, 배와 같은 인공 구조물과 만나 감정의 이동을 가능하게 하며, 자아가 균형을 향해 나아갈 수 있는 흐름을 형성한다. Lightness의 장면은 균형에 도달한 상태를 제시하기보다, 감정의 부유성과 작가의 의지가 결합되며 균형을 향한 이동이 시작되는 순간에 머문다.

Lightness는 감정을 무게의 개념으로 해석하는 세계 The Shape of Weight 안에서, 가벼운 감정이 어떤 장면을 이루고 어떤 조건 속에서 성립하는지를 처음으로 제시하는 시각적 장(場)이다. 이후의 시리즈가 무거움이나 거리의 국면을 확장해 나간다면, Lightness는 이 세계의 구조 안에서 가벼움이 성립하기 위한 조건을 가장 먼저 드러내는 출발점으로 기능한다.
